Valle d’Aosta is in the Northwest of Italy and is accessible from France via the Mont Blanc Tunnel and from Switzerland via the St. Bernhard Tunnel. The language spoken in this area is a mix of Italian, German and French, a truly unrivalled dialect!
Three of the highest mountaintops are in this region: Mont Blanc, Monte Rosa and Monte Cervino (the Matterhorn). For experienced mountain climbers, these mountains are a true challenge. Should you make it to the top in good weather, you’ll be rewarded with a beautiful view of the area. Winter sport enthusiasts will find three skiing areas: Breuil-Cervinia is nicely situated and is the highest skiing area in Italy. It always has snow and has around 200 km of ski runs. The second area is Courmayeur, a village at the foot of Mont Blanc. It has a lively town centre with various après-ski possibilities and good restaurants. The last is Monte Rosa, a peaceful area with breathtaking views. Ideal for families and beginners.
Valle d’Aosta is not only synonymous with high mountains; it also has a wild countryside, deep valleys and fantastic wooded areas. We definitely recommend Gran Paradiso National Park (on the border with Piemonte) for those into nature. Beautiful mountain landscapes, special flora and fauna (such as chamois and ibexes which run free) make this area a true oasis of peace and tranquillity.
The city of Aosta is also called the ‘Rome of the Alps’. It is a historic city with Roman remains and is – certainly for those into culture – worth visiting.
