Apulia is situated in Southern Italy in the heel of the Italian boot. The arrival airports for this region are Brindisi and Bari. Various civilisations (for example the Greeks, Turks, Arabs and Spanish) have left their traces here (in certain villages of the southern peninsula Salenta ancient Greek is still spoken). The region is also rich in baroque architecture. Even though it is gaining in popularity, the region is a lot less visited by tourists than the more northern regions. This means it has managed to maintain its authenticity and a holiday in this region is ideal to discover 'the real Italy'.
Endless plains, rolling hills, rural areas with olive tree fields, vineyards and ancient 'white' towns are waiting to be discovered. Apulia is the main olives producer in Italy and you will also find good wines at reasonable price here. The Baroque town of Lecce, in the South, is definitely worth a visit. You will find many interesting buildings here. Around the magnificent Piazza del Duomo (dome square) you will see the cathedral, the Palazzo Vescovilr and the Seminary. Don't forget the Santa Croce either, a church dating back to 1549, with an impressive baroque front. Or visit the archaeological digs in the Roman amphitheatre. If you like churches and cathedrals, you should visit those of Bari, Trani and Ruvo di Puglia.
And then there is the coast. Rocks, pine trees, sandy beaches, beautiful bays and blue sea. You will not have to drive far to the sea, because there is the Adriatic sea in the east, and the Ionic sea in the south. On the Atlantic coast, the peninsula of Gargano is specially beautiful (like the towns of Vieste and Rodi Garganico). Recommended too: Otranto and the spa resort Santa Cesarea Terme. On the Ionic coast you will find the beautiful harbour Gallipolli and S.M. di Leuca worth visiting for example. There are also numerous caves along the coastline.
Euro Relais offers very special cottages in Apulia: you can stay in a real Trullo here. Trulli (plural) are mysterious houses with a unique cone-shaped building style, unique in Apulia. Their construction keeps them cool in summer and they were used in the past by farmers to rest after a hard day's work in the fields. Today they are special monuments. There are thousands in the region around Alberobello, and this region is therefore listed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Sleeping in a Trullo is a special experience. Euro Relais offers you that opportunity!
