The Balaton region is a frequented holiday region, thanks to its famous Lake Balaton, Hungary's largest lake. It lends itself well to various water sports. You cannot only enjoy wonderful walks, but there is also a 220 km long cycle route around the lake. In addition, you can go for rides on horseback in this region and even go for a roundtrip over the lake or make a hot air balloon trip.
The ideal holiday spot for sun lovers and water enthusiasts is the south side of Lake Balaton. De southern banks are very popular. The region's capital is Siófok. This town has a special area for young people (similar to the Spanish Salou). The Bakony mountains north of Lake Balaton have much more to offer in terms of culture and natural beauty. Here, you will find undulating vine slopes, romantic valleys, and various regional parks that form part of the National Park of Balaton Highlands.
This region also has a rich tradition of wine. You will find various wine areas north of Lake Balaton, of which that of Badacsony is the most famous. You can take part in one of the many wine festivals in September, anywhere in the country.
