The Berner Oberland region is known for its high mountaintops such as the Eiger, Mönch, Jungfrau and Schilthorn. In good weather they offer a clear view of Mont Blanc and the Black Forest. Various ‘panorama restaurants’ can be found at the summits, where you can get a bite to eat and a drink while enjoying the incredible atmosphere. The most important excursion in Switzerland is in this region, the Jungfraujoch (3571 m), with the highest train station in Europe—this is highly recommended! It makes up part of the splendid ‘Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn’ region. This region has been listed on Unesco’s Natural World Heritage Site as ‘a unique landscape of special beauty’. You’ll find unique flora and fauna here, and the longest glacier in the Alps (and in the Wallis region), the Aletsch Glacier, can also be found here. Holiday towns in the Jungfrau region include Grindelwald, Interlaken, Wengen and Mürren. Grindelwald is a nice tourist ‘glacier village’ where you’ll find incredible natural scenery. A hiking tour of the glacial rift, spectacular and overwhelming, is not to be missed. Berner Oberland has 500 km of hiking and mountain paths and 400 km of bicycle routes—thus making it absolute paradise for the holiday maker interested in staying active. An alternative to a normal bicycle is the Trottibike, a kind of scooter which is a new trend worth trying out. A number of nice mountain lakes can also be found here, for example, there are the Brienzersee and the Thunersee. These lakes are in a beautiful location and offer you a nice view of the area. These are great for sailing, surfing and swimming, and they’re perfect for cooling off in the summer. The capital city of Bern is also in this region. Bern is a lively and multifaceted city, whose inner section has an almost Medieval character and nice squares, such as the Zytglogge, where it is always nice and busy. As the name suggests, the city of Interlaken rests between two lakes, at the foot of the mountains. It is a modern, fashionable city with a nice city centre where you can enjoy a nice meal in one of the many authentic Swiss restaurants. It is also the perfect starting point for going on a hiking trip in the mountains.
