The cuckoo clock, the 'Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte', and the dark forests probably spring to mind when you think of the Black Forest. But this region has a lot more to offer. The wonderful scenery of thick forests, vineyards, mountains, valleys, lakes, and streams is very popular with nature lovers and it also offers a great backdrop for all sorts of outdoor activities. The region boasts many marked walking and cycling routes. Lakes, such as the Schluchsee or the Mummelsee, are suitable for water sports.
It is also possible to enjoy the scenery by car – a number of tourists car routes has been set out in this region. Good examples of these are the Schwarzwald Panorama Route (50km), the Schwarzwald-Hochstrasse (60km), or the Schwarzwald-Baderstrasse (270km). Or try (part of) the Badische Weinstrasse: a route of 160 kilometres along vineyards. You can stop at one of the various wine cooperatives on the way.
A trip with a steam train is also possible – the Museum Train Wutachal. The castles and monasteries of this region are also well worth a visit, including the monasteries of Alpirsbach and Maulbronn, and places such as Gengenbach and Donaueschingen, or the health resort of Baden-Baden.
Tip: you can buy the 'SchwarzwaldCard', a combination ticket. This card gives you access to 140 venues, including castles and monasteries.
This is also a great area for winter sports, the low mountain range has altitudes of up to 1500 metres. It also includes long distance cross-country skiing routes.
Don’t forget to try the famous 'Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte'!
