Sterea Ellada (Central Greece) is one of the most mountainous Greece regions. It includes the prefectures of Attica (with Athens as its capital) Aitoloakarnania, Viotia, Evia island, Evrytania, Fthiotida and Fokida. It is the most heavily populated district in Greece, as it includes Athens City.
The slopes are forested with pine, beech and poplar trees. Running water and calm lakes interchange with uncounted coves and beaches. Hidden shores and picturesque islets bejewel the south-western coasts. The varied landscapes of the region remain beautiful no matter the season. That’s what makes it a perfect destination choice for any holiday!
For more action-oriented visitors, the small mountain villages offer thrilling ski slopes, the western coast is covered in deep forest, and the monumental ruins shed light on tales of history. As it has over the course of history, Sterea Ellada caters to both the minds and the bodies of those that traverse its mountain paths and seaside villages.
Central Greece offers scattered highlights – especially the site of the ancient oracle at Delphi (modern Dhelfí), and, further north, the other-worldly rock-top monasteries of Metéora. Most visitors head straight to Delphi, but those with extra time make a rewarding detour to Ósios Loukás monastery – containing the finest Byzantine mosaics in the country.
Rich historical background, mild climate during most of the year, wonderful shores, lush forests (some of which are impervious), rivers, lagoons and many traditional villages makes Central Greece region a holiday paradise for every tourist.
