The coast of Murcia, the Costa Cálida, stretches for over 250 kilometres and is an ideal holiday destination that is very comfortable thanks to its mild winter climate (± 18°C and no fewer than 315 days of sun shine each year). Impressive cliffs and steep rock faces separate the long sandy beaches and secluded inlets with clear blue water. Along this coast also lie picturesque fishing villages and seaside resorts such as La Manga del Mar Menor and Mazarrón.
The tourist resort of La Manga del Mar Menor lies between two seas, the calm ‘inland sea’ of Mar Menor and the Mediterranean. Mar Menor is very well suited to tourists and offers a charming atmosphere and many water sports opportunities. Here, you can go wind surfing, catamaran sailing, water skiing, and diving.
Mazarrón is a tourist centre with a history of mining – if you travel into the interior, you will see the scenery of the deserted mining industry. However, it also has a fishing tradition, still visible in the fishing harbour and the fish market. There is plenty to see and do. There are many interesting buildings in the city, and the ‘Bolnuevo’ are also well worth a visit. Erosion has created all sorts of extraordinary shapes in the white sandstone. Along the beaches you can indulge in various water sports, such as diving, parasailing, and water skiing.
But there is plenty more to do and see in this region. Along the coast, you will find a number of Regional Parks, which you can explore by bike, on foot, or sometimes even on horseback. The ‘Parque Regional de las Salinas y Arenales de San Pedro del Pinatar’ is a wetland, where flocks of flamingos linger at the end of summer, on their way to North-Africa. Part of the park is accessible – here, you can cycle or walk across an area of dunes, pine forests and sandy beaches. Parque Regional de Calblanque is an unspoilt part of the coast and has dunes, beaches and plateaus.
