Summer in East Tyrol means crystal-clear mountain lakes, tall summits, spectacular views and sunny green alpine meadows... Enjoy the impressive mountain landscape of East Tyrol, including the Hohe Tauern National Park, good food and a wide range of sports and recreational activities! The East Tyrol region is separated in the north from Salzburgerland by the Tauern mountain range and in the south from Italy by the Dolomites. The capital is Lienz, a charming town with an Italian flavour, clearly reflected in the architecture, culture and gastronomy. There is a golf course nearby and, just south of Lienz, you can swim and recreate in and around the small but lovely Lake Tristachersee. Take the cable lift from the Zettersfeld and Hochstein ski area to the top for a hike or simply to enjoy the panoramic view. Highly recommended is the Hohe Tauern National Park, the largest national park in Central Europe (1836 km²). The park is located in three different regions: Carinthia, Salzburgerland and East Tyrol. Here you?ll find a spectacular landscape with mountain lakes, waterfalls, a glacier and unique flora and fauna. It is a true summer paradise with numerous recreational possibilities, including mountain biking, swimming, fishing, horseback riding, abseiling, climbing, rafting, paragliding, canyoneering and naturally hiking along the extensive network of footpaths. East Tyrol is the ideal destination for active holidaymakers! The possibilities are endless? As mentioned above, the Hohe Tauern National Park is definitely recommended for sports lovers, but it?s also ideal for other types of recreation, such as bicycling along the Drau or Isel rivers or, in the south, following the spectacular Drauradweg, a 366-kilometre trail that runs partly through East Tyrol (in addition to Carinthia and Italy), along the Drau river and past the town of Lienz. Along the way, you can stop to visit small villages, take a swim in the lake or explore the sights. The route from Toblach to Völkermarkt is also perfect for children because it is flatter and less trafficked. Another family-friendly trail (easy) is the one between Lienz and Matrei in Isel Valley. East Tyrol is a real hiker?s paradise, too. Various valleys can be explored, including the Defereggen, Virgen, Villgraten and Hochpuster valleys!
