Rolling green hills, waterways and a rich industrial past. This region has plenty to offer for tourists. Walking, water sports and antiquities for sightseeing.

You could visit the nature reserves of 'l'Etang de Virelles' or 'Parc naturel du Pays des Collines'.

Various abbeys or the remains of abbeys can be visited in the region of Hainaut and its neighbouring region of Namur. The four hydraulic boat-lifts are also worth visiting. You'll find those at Canal du Centre, a well-known UNESCO World Heritage Site.

During your tour through this region, you should also visit villages such as Lompret, Ragnies, Vierves, Treignes and Oignies-en-Thiérarche. And, last but not least, the town of Tournai with its gothic cathedral of the Notre Dame and its belfry.

  • The Cistercian Abbey of Scourmont (known for its Trappist Beer Chimay).
  • The remains of the Abbey of Aulne.
  • The recreation and water sports area of 'The lakes of l'Eau d'Heure'. The lakes (reservoirs) create an ideal holiday location, which includes beaches and water sports facilities for rowing, canoeing, kayaking, water skiing and even diving.
  • Hydraulic boat-lifts at the Canal du Centre (World Heritage Site, UNESCO).
  • The gorges of Fondry des Chiens.
  • The Carnival in Binche. In this famous carnival town you can also visit the Museum of the Mask and the Carnival.
  • The ruins of the Cistercian Abbey of Villers-la-Ville in Walloon Brabant are well worth a visit.
