The Harz region is situated in the heart of Germany, in the federal states of Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia. Get to know this great region and its natural wonders, culture and rich history. This is an area which overflows with legends about witches, devils and other mysteries…
The nature lover will be sure to enjoy the beautiful low mountain landscape of Harz, with the highest peak of Brocken being 1142 metres high. Part of the Harz Mountains makes up the Harz National Park, a nature park with vast, dense forests, water falls, streams and lakes, as well as rare animal and plant species. Get a feel for the landscape while you travel a part of the 94-kilometre Harz Witches’ Trail. This route runs crossways across the low mountains, following the tracks of the witches, from Osterode in the west to Thale in the east.
In addition to enjoying the nature, you can also ‘get a taste’ of the local history. Admire the old half-timbered houses, castles and picturesque, historic towns such as the ‘Orange Route City’ of Stolberg, Halberstadt, Wernigerode, Sangerhausen, Nordhausen, Duderstadt and the UNESCO half-timbered towns of Quedlinbur and Goslar. Families can go to a fairy tale forest (in Bad Harzburg), an amusement park (Thale) or a number of summer toboggan runs (in Brocken, Thale, Sankt Andreasberg).
In the winter, cross-country skiers can make use of more than 500 kilometres of cross-country skiing runs, and there are also many opportunities for normal skiing.
