Destination North Sea Region, Germany

With the region North Sea we mean the coastal areas along the North Sea, like East Friesland, North Friesland and the East Friesian and North Friesian islands. An interesting region to visit, from our cottages on the coast !

East Friesland is the peninsula bordering on the Netherlands, between Dollart (Groningen) and Jadebusen. The landscape looks Dutch, with its pastures, cows, wind mills and dykes with lighthouses. But also hills, fen and heath plains, woods and rivers belong to the landscape of this region. On the coast you will find beautiful beaches, dunes and of course the Wadden Sea. If you go slightly inland, you can visit the towns Emden (Nannen art gallery), Oldenburg (e.g. the castle and Lamberti church), or Bremen (old harbour town with historical centre).

The holiday homes near the sea are ideal for a lovely holiday in this region, because there is enough to discover. The East Friesian Wadden islands are located before the East Friesian North sea coast. These islands are part of a protected nature area: the Niedersächsisches Wattenmeer National Park. This unique nature area of 2,400 km stretches to the Southern North Sea coast (Cuxhaven), and houses the Wadden, dunes, fen areas, woods, heaths and salt landscapes. The 7 Wadden islands are very popular with German tourists, because of their pretty sandy beaches, dune areas and nature. From many places along the coast between Ems and Elbe and between Emden and Otterndorf you can make boat trips to one of the islands and “Wadden walking” excursions are also on offer.

From our holiday homes on the coast near Cuxhaven, in the western part of the North Sea region, there is a lot to do too. The spa resort Cuxhaven is the largest North Sea beach resort in Germany. From here you can make a guided Wadden walking excursion or make a trip to the Wadden island Neuwerk with a horse and carriage or a mini cruise for seal watching. There are various wellness centres and spa resorts on the coast too. Spa resort Büsum for example is a popular, traditional spa reach resort. It is fun to go for a 'cure' or to relax from your holiday home.

In front of the coast at St. Peter-Ording and stretching up to the North Friesian islands, you will find the Schleswig-Holsteinisches Wattenmeer National Park, an exceptional Wadden nature area. St. Peter-Ording is often called the largest sand box in the world with 12 km of sandy beaches. Here is also the information centre of the national park, where you will learn more about the exciting world of the Wadden. You could also make a trip to one of the North Friesian islands. The largest and most northern island is Sylt. Here is also a pretty nature area with dunes, beautiful white sandy beaches and steep coasts, and thatched houses. Helgoland is known for its red rocks. The most famous rock is the 40 m. high Lange Anna. If you have more time, you could make some excursions to the historic towns of Lübeck or Schleswig.
