Destination Saxony-Anhalt, Germany

Saxony-Anhalt is always worth the trip. And here you can experience culture in its purest form, because central Germany is deeply engrained in European cultural tradition.

The landscape of Saxony-Anhalt varies from vast lowlands, to low Harz mountain range with highest mountain Brocken (1,141 meters). The Harz mountains and Brocken peak are steeped in legend, and were a source of fascination even to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Heinrich Heine in their time, prompting them to explore the region.

Goethe set many of the scenes in ‘Faust’ in the Harz mountains, such as the Walpurgis Night celebrations, which are played out on the Brocken. With his ‘Harz Journey’, Heine erected a literary monument to the region. Many footpaths in the Harz are named in honour of the two great German poets, and specially waymarked.

The capital of Saxony-Anhalt is Magdeburg. It is the second largest city in the state, after Halle. Nearby is the city of Dessau, where the "Bauhaus" is located. The Bauhaus provided a basis for the field of architecture and fine arts in the area. Dessau is also home to the opulent Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Realm. The city’s main attraction is the Wörlitzer Park which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Many of the towns, localities and regions in Saxony-Anhalt have a unique cultural profile. Impressive cathedrals and churches, castles, palaces and gardens, tell of the long and turbulent history of Europe, and are excellent places not only to visit, but also to relax or indulge in sporting activities.
