Ticino (Tessin), named after the river of the same name, is the most southern area of Switzerland and is part of the Svizzera Italiana (Italian speaking Switzerland) together with a part of the Graubünden (Grigioni) region.
Ticino is an ideal walking area, which is only known by few. The mountain valleys Valle Maggia, Valle Verzasca and Valle Blenio are very popular with mountain hikers. The more touristy areas can be found around the Lago Maggiore and Lago Lugano, near Ascona, Locarno and Lugano. Limited winter sports are possible in the Ticino mountains .
The first impression of Ticino, as the region is called by the local population, is not really attractive, but nothing could be further from the truth! Within a few kilometres from the Gotthard-motorway you find yourself in a true Himalaya landscape. Even to this day some primitive villages of this region can only be reached on foot. Make the nicest walks directly from your holiday home.
