Destination Vorarlberg, Austria

From the shores of the Bodensee (Lake Constanz) to the 3000-metre-high, snow-capped mountaintops... The landscape of Austria’s most western region is very diverse, with mountains, forested hills, green valleys, hidden lakes, waterfalls and traditional Austrian villages.

If you want to get up to a more active holiday in the summer, you’ll find that the opportunities here are legion: hiking, mountain biking, golfing, rafting, canyoning, rappelling or swimming on one of the beaches. Hikers will find 6000 km of marked hiking trails in the beautiful Bregenzerwald. Funiculars run from various villages to the hiking areas which are at higher elevations. There are also special trails (and courses) for Nordic Walking. Winter sport enthusiasts will also find much to do here, in the famed resorts of Arlberg, Montafon, or the ‘royal’ Lech.

A nice way to enjoy the landscape is a car ride along the Silvretta Hochalpenstrasse, which connects Vorarlberg and Tirol with one another. This is one of the area’s most beloved and beautiful mountain routes and goes along beautiful panoramas.

The capital city of Bregenz is on the Lake Constanz and attracts many visitors in July and August due to the Bregenzer Festspiele (a music festival), with the world’s largest floating stage. The city has a historic centre (called the ‘Oberstadt’). The Unterstadt, on the other hand, is the modern part of the city, with the boulevard. A boat trip can be made from here across the lake, and bicycle routes have been mapped out around the lake. You can also take the funicular to the top of Mount Pfänder, where you’ll have a great view of the city and the lake.
